Every summer my husband and I hit the road in our Airstream, “Joy,” to escape the desert heat where we live. We both work remotely, so this isn’t a vacation technically, but life in 280 square feet is pared down and simplified, so it feels that way. The usual myriad of errands and distractions of home shrink away. We still have to buy groceries, cook, and clean, but those things become less all-consuming (plus it only takes me 15 minutes to clean this tiny home). 😎
But whether we’re at home or on the road, I always have a creative project going. When I’m writing, playing the ukulele or singing, drawing or painting, I enter a different plane. Time disappears, stops, bends, and sometimes even rewinds. I reconnect with my deepest self and feel renewed.
I hope your summers will also involve travel and adventure, but if that isn’t in the cards, you can still escape. You can make time bend to your will. Doing something (anything!) creative– even if only for fifteen minutes– can transport you somewhere else everyday.
It doesn’t have to be a big thing. It could just be a doodle book, or journaling, or singing in the shower, or dancing in the kitchen as you cook (or whenever you feel like it). What’s a thing you’ve always wanted to try, or start, or pull back out of a drawer? Maybe you’ve been wanting to sign up for a workshop or class or perform at an open mic. Rearrange your living room furniture! Learn how to knit! Do it! Whatever it is! It will transport you to another world, even if only in your mind and heart. You don’t need an Airstream. You just need to create. You never know where that space and that creative energy might take you.
Stories, poems, paintings, dances, songs and any other creations we make (sweaters, cookies, sand castles, etc.) have the power to deliver us somewhere new. Do something creative today and everyday. I’d love to hear what you make and discover along the way!
That view!
